Mund and its Saffron

The tiny village of Mund above Brig in upper Canton Valais is the home of the world’s finest saffron. This is not just a wild claim, because it has been scientifically proved. Saffron is also the world’s most expensive spice, due to the difficulties in cultivating and harvesting it. In fact, it takes some 150 flowers to produce just 1 gram of saffron powder, and it’s all done by hand.

German-born Dr. Jürgen Rohmeder is a local expert on saffron. He spoke with Bob Zanotti.
